Emergency refrigeration repair in London and surrounding areas
Climate Flow Limited offers 24/7 emergency callouts for commercial refrigeration, air conditioning and domestic heating and boilers across London and surrounding areas. If you need emergency refrigeration repair in London, or an air conditioning system or a boiler at home has broken down, call 020 3488 5452. This page sets out what to do while you wait and what to tell the engineer.
A breakdown is an emergency when it puts stock, people or a home at risk. Examples are a cold room (a walk-in refrigerated room) or a cellar cooler (the unit that keeps a pub cellar cold) that has stopped holding temperature, an air conditioning system that has failed in a space that relies on it, or a home boiler that gives no heat or hot water. A smell of gas is different, and is covered below.
What to do while you wait for a refrigeration engineer
Food safety comes first. GOV.UK's food hygiene guidance for businesses says chilled food must be kept at 8°C or below, and advises setting a fridge to 5°C or below so food stays cold enough.
- Check the temperature on the display or with a probe thermometer, and write down each reading with the time.
- Move chilled food to a working fridge if you have one. GOV.UK says chilled food can be kept out of the fridge for up to 4 hours and must then be thrown away; food out for less than 4 hours can go back in the fridge.
- Follow your own food safety procedures for anything you are unsure about.
- Do not open panels on the refrigeration system or try to add refrigerant.
The commercial refrigeration services page lists the refrigeration work we install and maintain, including commercial fridge and freezer repair.
What if refrigerant is leaking?
F gases are fluorinated gases used as the refrigerant in many refrigeration and air conditioning systems. GOV.UK's guidance on checking F gas equipment for leaks says a leak found during a check must be repaired as soon as possible and the test repeated to check the repair worked. Responsibility for stopping leaks is shared between the people who use the equipment and the technicians who service it. Your part is to call it in. The repair is work for an engineer, and Climate Flow's engineers are F-Gas certified.
Air conditioning breakdowns
If an air conditioning system stops cooling or leaks water from an indoor unit, note any error code on the display and call us.
What to do if you smell gas
A smell of gas is a matter for the National Gas Emergency Service, not for Climate Flow, so call them first on 0800 111 999. National Gas gives these steps:
- Do not smoke or light matches.
- Do not turn electrical switches on or off.
- Open doors and windows.
- Turn off the meter at the control handle, unless the meter is in the cellar.
Carbon monoxide is a separate danger. The HSE's carbon monoxide guidance lists the symptoms as headaches or dizziness, breathlessness, nausea, loss of consciousness, tiredness, pains in the chest or stomach, erratic behaviour and visual problems. If you suspect carbon monoxide, the HSE advises switching off the appliance, shutting off the gas supply at the meter control valve, opening doors and windows, and getting urgent medical advice.
Boiler breakdowns at home
Climate Flow is Gas Safe registered for domestic gas work. The HSE's gas safety guidance for home owners says anyone employed to work on gas appliances in a home must be a Gas Safe registered engineer, competent in that area of gas work, and that the engineer's competencies are shown on the back of their Gas Safe Register ID card. If your boiler has stopped, note any fault code on its display and call us. Our central heating page covers domestic heating and boiler work.
What should I tell the engineer on the phone?
Tell the engineer what the equipment is, what it is doing and how to reach it. The more of this you have ready, the better the engineer can prepare for the visit.
- The equipment: cold room, cellar cooler, display chiller, ice machine, air conditioning unit or boiler.
- The make and model, from the plate on the unit if you can reach it safely.
- What it is doing: not cooling, iced up, alarming, leaking water, making a noise, no heat or no hot water.
- Any error code on the controller or display.
- The temperature readings you have taken, and when the problem started.
- The address, who will meet the engineer, and where the equipment is (roof, plant room, cellar or loft).
How can I reduce the chance of a breakdown?
Planned preventive maintenance (PPM) means regular visits to check and service equipment before it fails. Climate Flow offers maintenance contracts for refrigeration and air conditioning equipment.
